Abstract

THIS PAPER OUTLINES THE WORK CARRIED OUT BY THE EEVC (EUROPEAN EXPERIMENTAL VEHICLES COMMITTEE) ON SIDE IMPACT COLLISIONS INVOLVING PASSENGER CARS. IT INVESTIGATES THE FOLLOWING AREAS: NEED FOR A STANDARD SIDE IMPACT TEST; CRASH CONFIGURATIONS AND CONSEQUENCES OF SIDE IMPACT ACCIDENTS; INJURY MECHANISMS IN SIDE IMPACT; THE PROBLEM OF COMPATIBILITY IN SIDE IMPACT; TEST METHODS FOR SIDE IMPACT SAFETY ASSESSMENT; DESCRIPTION OF EXISTING DEFORMABLE BARRIERS; PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE CHOICE OF A SIDE IMPACT TESTING METHOD; PROPOSED SIDE IMPACT STANDARD TEST; RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE.
