Abstract

A system for controlling the headway distance when following a preceding vehicle in congested traffic has been developed to assist drivers in executing driving tasks under congested expressway conditions. An analysis was made of driving behavior characteristics in congested expressway traffic, and a control system was configured that suitably simulates those characteristics. This system provides natural vehicle behavior even when traveling at low speeds.
