Abstract

This paper focuses on investigating how to design the human interface for the multi-information environment of in-vehicle information systems based on drivers' characteristics. In the experiment, a driving simulator was utilized and it was investigated how the driver's behavior, eye movement and subjective rating were influenced by the integration of multiple ITS information, when in-vehicle information systems included headway warning and blind-spot warning information, in addition to speed and route information used in the usual driving environment. The results showed that drivers' behaviors and the effect of the warning information depended on whether the warning information enabled drivers to recognize the zone and direction of potential collision. This indicates that, in the human interface for the multi-information environment, the warning information should be appropriately designed based on the spatial relationship so that drivers can recognize the spatial relationship between their car and the incident as quickly as possible.
