With a view to studying the influence of the road on accidents, the most significant accident accumulation zones, of limited extent, were determined in the 18000 km of continental Portugal's trunk road network. The characteristics of the road were then observed and measured on the spot. The conclusion of this study and its continuation makes it possible to obtain technical data as regards the characteristics of the roads, in order to improve the level of the design and construction standards so as to ensure better safety conditions for users.
