Abstract

The past few years have seen a boom in motorcycling in Australia. The rapid increase in numbers of motorcycles has been accompanied by a rise in the number of crashes involving these vehicles and in the number of casualties. This paper describes the extent of and trends in the problem of motorcycle crashes. A special study of motorcycle crashes is described and some preliminary results from the study used to test countermeasure hypotheses. Future applications of these data are also mentioned.
