Abstract

The European Commission published in July 2008 an invitation to tender for a service contract regarding a Study on possible migration to toll systems using satellite positioning and mobile communications technologies by systems using other technologies. The study findings will contribute in drawing up the report of the European Commission foreseen in Article 2(3) of Directive 2004/52/EC: The Directive recommends to use satellite-based (also called the global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-based or GNSS/CN-based)) toll systems which owing to their great flexibility and versatility, may serve to meet the requirements of the new road-charging policies planned at Community and Member State level. For the majority of existing electronic toll systems in the European Union this would mean migrating fromcurrently used dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) based to satellite-based toll systems.
