Pavement markings in Hokkaido are damaged by snow removal and other factors are repainted every spring. The recent strong demand to reduce costs in public works in Japan makes it necessary to reconsider the frequency of such repainting. In this study, driver visibility assessment of pavement markings was conducted for the purpose of establishing repainting criteria, and the standard of lane edges that can meet the needs of road users wasexamined. Visibility assessment of pavement markings by actual driving attest track and a pavement marking visibility assessment experiment using computer graphics (CG) animation were conducted, and optimal and marginal assessment ranges of lane edges that are acceptable to road users were obtained using the price sensitivity measurement method. The effects of roadtraffic environment factors were also evaluated using CG, and conjoint analysis was conducted. The mean attribute significance was found to be in the order of time of day, weather, road structure and roadside environment. The marginal rank was from 1.7 to 2.2, and the optimal rank was from 2.3 to 2.6. When considering repainting criteria, the method of evaluating the status of pavement markings is also important. Software using digital image files to determine levels of damage to pavement markings was therefore developed as an accurate and objective measurement tool that doesn't require special devices. As a result, a measurement method was developed that is highly accurate (with an error rate of 5% or lower) and was fully applicable to practical use for 114 samples out of 129.
