A study of severe vehicular accidents. Phase I: medico-engineering training program.

Abstract

This report gives the results of a comprehensive and systematic study of ten severe accidents which occured in Atlanta, Georgia during a three month period. The research was a broadbased team effort which involved the participation of a civil engineer, neurological surgeon, automotive technician, safety engineer, pathologist, and medical secretary. The research included an epidemiological study of factors leading to the initiation of accidents as well as a study of the "second collision " to establish the kinematics of the occupants and to identify the agent(s) which caused the injuries and deaths.
