This paper presents the results of a study to indicate the dimensions of motorcycle riders, which are relevant to the design of motorcycles. In particular, the study investigated features of the riding package, such as fairings and crash protection devices, which depend on the relative locations of various parts of the rider for their effectiveness. The study considered especially: (1) six specific relevant body dimensions of motorcyclists; and (2) knee position as an example of the statistical distribution of the location of parts of the body in relation to the motorcycle. Allowance also had to be made for the different types of motorcycle, corresponding to their different uses. A sample of 109 male and 31 female motorcyclists was chosen at a 1993 UK motorcycle rally. Various measurements were made on their bodies and vehicles, and they answered various questions. The results of the anthropometric survey suggest strongly that the motorcyclists who were measured have a different distribution of body characteristics than the UK population in general and UK car drivers; for example, they tend to be taller. The results of the sitting position study indicate considerable variation in the most forward positions of motorcyclists' legs in the normal position on a static test rig. Some further research needs are indicated.
