Abstract

It is important to know the mechanical properties which are used as input parameters in the analytical design of road pavements and in analytical proportioning of pavement mixes. It is accepted that pavements with different properties can lead to completely different solutions (material selection and layer thickness) in the analytical design of pavements. Exploitation of the mechanical properties when designing pavements enables the technical and financial optimisation of a road project. In this work, fatigue criteria and stiffness moduli obtained through laboratory investigations and results from earlier work are presented for a number of roadbases. The indirect tensile test, which is suitable for routine use, has been applied in the laboratory investigations. Two factors, here termed the field factor and shift factor, have been developed for determining the stiffness and fatigue resistance of roadbase layers on the basis of corresponding properties determined in a laboratory environment for practical use in analytical design.
