Abstract

This report consists of four studies concerning the subjective appraisal of specific infrastructural measures to decrease driving speed. In an evaluation project four roads were adapted using these infrastructural measures. For the assessment of the subjective appraisal the Road Environment Construct Scale was used. The consistent result across the studies was that drivers appreciated the experimental roads less than the control roads, or less than in the pre-experimental phase. This finding implies that the primary goal of implementing discomfort was met. Furthermore, there was a trend towards a higher Activational Value on the experimental roads, which may imply a more alerted driving style. The appreciation of the Perceptual Variation did not depend on the measures.
