Abstract

In Great Britain during 1983, 32349 vehicles were categorised as being involved in an overtaking accident. in Europe overtaking had been identified as being the fifth common cause of road traffic accidents. in a review of driver error in overtaking accidents it is reported that overtaking in the vicinity of a junction and /or using a turning lane to overtake are two of the principal causes of this type of accident. Results of a large scale questionnaire study reveal that, in general those drivers who overtook near junctions were not aware of the potential dangers of doing so. A driver education campaign could maybe help.
