Abstract
The first Norwegian subsea road tunnel was built in Vardo during 1979-1983. There are now approximately 100km of subsea road tunnels in Norway. Construction costs for the tunnels are discussed. Between 1992 and 2000, prices increased by 37%, due to an improvement in tunnel standards. Operation costs vary between tunnels and from year to year. They include costs for electricity for lighting and ventilation and pumping costs. Other operational problems include algae, seawater leakages, corrosion and damage to aluminium linings. Nineteen personal injury accidents have been reported in the 17 tunnels. Three fires, all without injuries, have been reported in Norwegian subsea road tunnels.
