Abstract

This paper studies the effect of subsidies on the economic efficiency of transport undertakings, and whether they lead to higher costs of provision, more especially in a climate of governmental policies designed to reduce public expenditure. A single equation econometric analysis is outlined which suggests that subsidies and the nature of the political control of an area do influence the level of costs.
