Abstract
The construction and maintenance of roads constructed on peat has always been a problem particularly in Ireland where one seventh of the surface of the country is covered by peat. This report describes an in-depth study of a 2 km stretch of road in Co Kildare, built on peat. details are given of the dynaflect survey, site investigation, particularly of moisture content and shear strength, underlying peat stratum, pavement design, method used to predict settlement, and equations relating shear strength to moisture content.
