Abstract

Work zone safety has become a serious concern of State highway agencies, the highway industry, the Federal government, and other public interest groups. Because of this concern, the AASHTO Standing Committee on Highways requested the Standing Committee on Highway Traffic Safety and the Public Affairs Task Group on Work Zone Safety to jointly address this issue and recommend actions which could enhance safety in work zone operations. The Standing Committee on Highway Traffic Safety therefore collected and analyzed work zone accident data. The purpose was to determine the nature and scope and the problem and possible accident countermeasures. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made.
