Abstract

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is responsible for reducing vehicle-related fatalities and injuries on our nation’s highways. Research has shown that effective State and local traffic safety laws play an important role in helping to reduce motor vehicle crashes. This publication provides the status of State statutes or regulations that are concerned with either speed limit or speed-related violations. Local laws are not reported. This publication provides a summary chart of key provisions of State speeding laws, and detailed lists of these laws in every State, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Laws summarized in this document include basic speed laws as well as other speed-related laws. These lists include code and case law citations, which should help individuals conducting additional research in this area of the law, and which can be used to facilitate the comparison of State laws in the subject areas.
