Abstract

Assumptions about the future state of transport technology have an important influence on the recommendations developed in transport planning studies. Existing and potential developments in transport technology are examined and a framework that transport planners might use to forecast the times at which transport technological innovations might be feasible is outlined. The characteristics used in this framework are the guideway type, vehicle type, propulsions and control.
