Abstract

This paper identifies the causes of sun phantom in fibreoptic signs. It quantifies phantom luminance for a Type 400 fibre-optic motorway sign and shows how it may reduce visibility by affecting signal colour and contrast. The presence of a veiling luminance further reduces visibility, Shading 'with louvres is suggested as the best solution for control of reflected light.
