The Digital Road Map System (DRM) digitizes almost all of road networks in Japan with 'links' and 'nodes', which can be managed using absolute coordinates. The current mature state of in-navigation systems epitomizes DRM applications. The trend sets the direction for current and future road planning for network construction, as well as their operation and maintenance. This paper describes features of DRM and its combined systems, which are being used for road network planning, traffic restriction information sharing in related administrators and traffic accident analysis. A Traffic Accident Analysis system records segments where accidents have been recorded in historical data and sifts through potentially hazardous segments to identify causality. A Traffic Restriction information sharing system is provided with DRM as a cross-sectional platform to share data among varied administrators of the national government and municipalities. The DRM allows stakeholders to access critical data, including detour data when road networks are closed due to such as natural hazards. A Road Network planning system integrates DRM with Land Mesh Data (numerical data on population, land use and others) in an innovative way to analyse newly-built road network performance, reveal impacts, and clearly show the benefits in a highly-accurate way.
