Abstract

A number of Europe's road authorities and operators have joined forces toaddress the issues and needs of long distance travellers on the Trans European Road Network (TERN). They have set up a long distance corridors demonstration project. The key activities for cooperation are traffic information and network management, with a special focus on freight transporters' interests. The approach is to strengthen regional and cross border cooperation - a so called chain approach - and optimise the use of existing ITS measures on the TERN to this purpose. Examples of activities are a quick scan study into a common European telephone number for traveller information, pilot projects for coordinated traffic management strategies and knowledge exchange on freight related projects.
