Abstract

Swiss Federal Railways have introduced a new system for computer-aided traffic monitoring and regulation. SURF (for Systeme Unifie de Regulation Ferroviaire - Unified System for Train Regulation), developed by Steria, has brought multiple-screen graphical displays and real-time monitoring and simulation of the entire SBB network to the control rooms. The system detects any divergence from planned schedules, detects potential operation conflicts, keeps travellers better informed, and assists regulators in schedule recovery.
