Abstract

After a brief recapitulation of the activities of PIARC Technical Committee on Surface Characteristics, the C1 session dealt with issues related to pavement surface, notably longitudinal as well as transverse evenness deterioration and unevenness. These included: how to harmonise the dozens of existing methods to measure and evaluate unevenness used throughout the world; how to deduce specific indices from road profile measurements as regards the effects of unevenness on safety, riding comfort, fuel consumption and environmental impact; the effect of noise and vibrations from a deteriorating pavement on the environment; and how to make the best use of pavement condition data in pavement management.
