Abstract

Dynamic measuring systems fixed to the roller for direct, contiuous surface control of the compaction of layers in earthworks and road construction, have been on the market now for more than 15 years. The original concept to inform the operator about compaction effect of the roller during compaction work, by means of a simple measuring instrument led to development of the surface dynamic compaction control measuring method. This method gives significant construction related and quality assurance information for the benefit of the operator, the contractor and the customer. The development reflects the need for increased production output, the increased importance of financial performance as well as growing demands for quality assurance. During the compaction process the operator receives information about the current condition of the compaction and load bearing capacity of the soil layer by means of a gauge or display. Irregularities and weak spots are immediately identified and indicated. Research in cooperation with Universities and numerous site applications on airport, railway, road, dam and waste disposal construction sites have shown that Terrameter (Bomag) measuring systems can also be used for measuring important soil properties. This denotes real progress in soil compaction quality assurance because, unlike the traditional spot compaction test methods, full surface covering compaction measurement is now possible. (A)
