Abstract

This survey, forming the second deliverable of the TRAINER-Project, being part of the fifth framework programme on competitive and sustainable growth of the European Commission, describes the current driver training systems in a number of countries, including the members of the European Union and some related countries, like for instance most Central European countries, Northern African states and Israel, as well as the wishes of both driver trainers and driving examiners concerning training programs for novice drivers. The survey has been carried out by the International Committee for Driver Testing Authorities (CIECA), and by the European Driving Schools Association (EFA). The project TRAINER aims at analysing current and developing new methods for driver training, with the use of multimedia and simulator tools. This survey should serve as a basis for the development of multimedia training tools for the theory training and of driving simulator scenarios for the practical training. From the wishes of the driving instructors and the driving examiners, and from an analysis of gaps in the driver training resulting from these wishes, new forms and contents of driver training should be derived and highlighted.
