Abstract

The role of the railways in meeting the transportation demands of a developing country is discussed. The methods by which this an be achieved are outlined. To a large extent they depend on local conditions. The possibilities for the railways in the future lie in their strict savings of space, necessitated by the rapid population growth and in its adaptability to automation.
