Abstract

The use of computers and control in traffic systems is approached from the idea of first controlling a single vehicle and then broadening the problem to include the control of multiple vehicles in a closed system. Typical traffic control schemes are described and the traffic control functions to be performed are identified. The concept of computer control functions occurring in different time spans is also developed. A brief description is given of the structuring of process computer software for the traffic control problem. Lastly a cursory review of the current literature on the subject of computer control of traffic is made.
