Abstract

Sustainable development is a new principle to guide policy-making at national and international levels. This paper shows how it can guide the development of transport policy and the planning of new transport infrastructure. This paper discusses the principle and its application to transport. The environmental effects of transport influencing sustainability are discussed and how these have helped shape transport policy at EC and national levels examined. A way of examining the extent to which transport policies and proposals are sustainable will then be described by looking at how interactions between transport and the environment may be categorised and related to policy objectives.
