Abstract

This paper describes an expert system approach to assessing the sustainability impact of non-urban road projects, by predicting changes to sustainability indicators. The method is applied to the new Western Explorer road in northwest Tasmania. Use of a sustainability assessment method to explore the consequences of project options can lead to improved planning decisions, and to better design of baseline surveys and monitoring programs.
