This paper reviews the response adopted in the USA to transport and land use policies, programs and investment through the Intermodal Surface Transport Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), Transport Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) and the current re-authorisation planned for late 2003. These legislative tools have had a significant role in changing culture and attitudes towards public transport in the United States. The current reauthorisation process, under a change of administration, will have critical impacts on the future of public transport in many cities and their ability to sustain increases in public transport use.
