Abstract

This paper presents a review of recent developments in thinking on sustainable transport for our cities, concentrating on Melbourne where the subject has attracted considerable interest. The paper examines the shape of the transport task now and in the future, the importance of planning for more sustainable transport, and what some of the imperatives are as we move forwards. It concludes that the greatest priority is to rebuild urban public transport systems to increase their carrying capacity, and to extend them fully into newer suburbs, many of which have never seen proper public transport services. The paper describes the integrated approach that is needed and proposes a range of changes to existing processes.
