Road surface monitoring has been conducted in Sweden at least since 1929 and regularly since 1987. This report describes the monitoring methods and indicators that have been used to describe the road surface condition during the years 1987 to 2005, in Sweden. A road and its surface have various conditions depending on how well constructed and maintained it is and when in time it is observed. To assess the condition, objective indicators are needed. The ultimate goal is to produce objective data that can be used to decide if goals are achieved, which means if maintenance strategies have been effective or not. But other goals are to support as well as being part of the pavement management work. Monitoring techniques and indicators have been developed with respect to the accessible and usable technique present. Therefore compromises have been necessary to make practically implementable methods. As stated earlier the need of information changes with time due to the ever increasing needs from the society. A development of indicators can be justified by considering the changes with the need of higher speeds (safety), longer durability (more and heavier traffic loads) and less environmental impact (climate change etc.) This report describes the monitoring methods and indicators that have been used to describe the road surface condition during the years 1987 to 2005, in Sweden.
