Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in Sweden. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) the structure of the public transport system, b) car ownership and use, c) urban and regional transport, d) interurban transport and e) rural transport. Travel patterns are examined in more detail with statistics provided for a) growth in travel demand between 1980 and 1988, b) trip purpose and c) modal split. Sweden's policy making structure is described and its main concerns outlined.
