Abstract

This paper describes that national, regional and local authorities are involved in the Swedish bicycle initiative. The main objective of the Swedish initiative group is to increase the level of helmet use among: (1) children under 12 years old; (2) 13-18 year-olds; and (3) adults. The aim is to achieve a substantial reduction in both the number of head injuries, and in their medical consequences by the year 2000. The four main strategic areas are as follows: (i) the information strategy; (ii) the education strategy; (iii) the activity strategy in general; and (iv) the evaluation strategy. Task forces are currently being created to develop these strategies into action. Networking and involvement of others are important features of the initiative. The 'Put your Bicycle Helmet on' initiative is a current initiative from the National Swedish Society of Road Safety (NTF). This initiative is based, among other things, on cost calculations. The primary group of the NTF initiative is 6-12 year-olds. The teacher is seen as the main safety guard.
