The report gives an overview of the Swiss Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). It starts with a description of the initial situation, the location of Switzerland as alpine transit country in the heart of Europe, the main Swiss transport infrastructure and traffic problems, competencies, financing bases, etc. It informs about the Swiss transport policy with the main objectives, the Swiss Road ITS strategy guidelines, the ITS measures, running and planned ITS activities, standardisation, combined use of the ITS infrastructure and system architecture, costs, expected benefits, etc. The report describes the various ITS activities, primarily in the area of the Swiss National Road Network (SNRN), the most important running and planned ITS measures, the use of new digital information techniques, the implementation of the world-wide Radio Data System (RDS) with specific Traffic Message Channel (TMC), Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC), the new distance-related electronic fee collection (EFC) system for heavy trucks over 3,5 tons within Switzerland, the use of intelligent variable message systems (VMS), video based enforcement, first out comings and results of satellite (GPS) based ITS, tested in transalpine Switzerland.
