Abstract

Earlier, work of the Traffic Group in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics was restricted to platoon flow with diffusion between a pair of intersections with coordinated fixed-time control. The present paper discussed further developments in which a modified form of the Dunne-Potts algorithm replaces fixed-time working. The paper shows that the adoption of the technique is advantageous in that is provides flexibility of operation for commuter flow along radial roads. Simulation experiments relating to steady-state flow conditions carried out using the Atlas computer at Manchester University are discussed in detail.
