Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in Switzerland. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) the structure of the public transport system, b) car ownership and use, c) urban and regional transport and d) interurban transport. Travel patterns are considered in more detail with statistics provided for a) number of trips, b) modal split, c) purpose, d) distance travelled, e) travel time and f) travel day. Switzerland's policy making structure is described, its main problems identified and transport policies since 1925 traced.
