Abstract

The Sydney Orbital has been the central element in Sydney’s road strategy for around two decades. Although parts of the Orbital have been in use for some years, the full motorway ring will shortly come into service. It will provide Sydney with a motorway ring more than 110 kilometres long connecting key land uses. It will form the basis of the Sydney strategic road network for freight, commuters and recreational travel. Completion of the orbital will offer a safe and efficient route for commuter traffic, commercial vehicles and trucks. This paper provides an outline of the development of the Sydney Orbital. It quantifies benefits in terms of road safety and travel times. Some conclusions are drawn about the land-use/transport interaction and improvements to accessibility for emerging land use developments.
