Abstract

This keynote paper provides an overview of the topic of driver assessment and improvement, with regard to psychological aspects. The aim of the process is to protect other road users from dangerous drivers, to protect individual drivers from an oversimplified penalty system and to improve the driving culture in society. Traffic psychologists have developed new methods to support this process. Aptitude tests for drivers must be continuously checked and improved and an effective quality management system should be provided. Following a report by the German Association of Professional Psychologists, such a system was initiated in Germany. The author recommends that psychological examinations should be included in European guidelines for driver training. For the covering abstract see ITRD E113725 (C 22328 CD-ROM).
