Abstract

In 2004 Vaexjoe University was granted financing within the 6th framework program of the EU to manage a project aiming at producing clean hydrogen rich synthesis gas (CHRISGAS); with a co-financial support from the Swedish energy agency (STEM) as well. The long-term objective of this project is to use the synthesis gas to produce various liquid fuels like e.g. DME, Gasoline, MeOH etc. or hydrogen depending on the evolution of the hydrogen infrastructure. This to meet the demands of the directive 2003/30/EC namely that 2 per cent by 2005 and 5 per cent by 2010 of the total used fuel should originate from renewable resources. The area is also of interest from the issues addressed in the Greenhouse Gas Emission Control Strategies (GECS) point of view. The project involves 16 partners from both industry and academics from 8 EU states with work performed in two interconnected areas. The first area is the research and development performed on various parts of the process, from biomass resources, biomass pre-treatment, piston wood feeding, catalyst development etc. to hot filter improvements and much more. Some of this research will then be used in the second main part of the project: the reconstruction of the gasifier in Vaernamo. Built and run by Sydkraft for co-generation of heat and electricity from 1994-2000. This unit will be modified to produce hydrogen rich synthesis gas by adding a reforming reactor and a water-gas shift reactor. This paper reviews some of the planed changes to the existing plant. The focus on discussion will deals mainly with the catalyst viewpoint in the reforming and water gas shift reactors (A). For the covering abstract of the conference see ITRD E212343.
