Abstract

The ability to effectively manage quality audio and video streams in vehicles is introducing a new extension of on-board information systems for drivers and passengers that includes innovative entertainment, information and security features. Using an open multimedia system, based on an optical fiber high-speed network, drivers and passengers will be able to configure and choose different application fields from their on-board system. The open system will be flexible, adaptable and scaleable, and will allow the end user to enjoy different applications in different areas of the vehicle. The goal of the "SYSNET" project (under the MEDEA-EUREKA umbrella) is to provide such an open architecture that is connected to the vehicle information platform to create a unique system with a single Human Machine Interface. Other parallel research in this field is being conducted by AMI-C (Automotive Multimedia Interface Collaboration), and will soon result in the establishment of automotive multimedia standards.
