Abstract

This paper proposes a system for analysing the contributing factors which lead to traffic collisions. The factors are described according to three general areas; the environment the vehicles and the road users. The multiplicity of factors within each of these areas is discussed from two points of view. First it is established whether some deficiency was present.Secondly if a deficiency is present each case is examined to determine whether it was a contributing factor in the collision under study. The incidence of certain deficiencies in vehicles involved in accidents is compared with their incidence in a control group of vehicles not involved in accidents. No significant differences were found. The combinations of contributing factors are described. The most frequent result from a combination of environmental and road user factors together. Vehicle factors are of relatively low importance.
