Abstract

The area traffic control system for central Tokyo is described. The control area which contains 123 signalised intersections is only 5 km2 but encompasses the central government offices the shopping and entertainment area, and the business and financial centre. Details are given of the selection of the control area, distribution of the 196 vehicle detectors and 105 local controllers, central processing unit, and two-stage fail-safe features in case of breakdown.
