Abstract

It is clear that substantial savings in both lives and personal property can be achieved through highway automation. The experimental results obtained from one phase of an automation study-automatic lateral guidance-are presented in this paper. Preliminary results indicate that the proposed system is feasible on non-reinforced roads. The problems encountered on reinforced highways have been identified and are presented in detail together with a discussion of one possible solution.
