Abstract

This article presents the basic principles of the SOCRATES (System of Cellular RAdio for Traffic Efficiency and Safety) project. Applications for using SOCRATES are listed, and include the provision of dynamic route guidance, fleet control, driver information, and tourist information. The four SOCRATES projects in the DRIVE 2 program are described. These are: a) RHAPIT (Rhine-Main Area Project for Integrated Traffic management); b) LLAMD/APPLE (Advanced Pilot Project for London and Europe); c) TIGER (Travel Information and Guidance for European Roads); and d) CITIES/TANGO (Cooperation for Integrated Traffic management and Information Exchange Systems/Traffic information And Navigation for GOthenberg). The partners in each project are listed and some major areas of SOCRATES technical development discussed.
