Abstract

This paper describes the system design on Advanced Mobile Information System (AMIS). AMIS is one of the six subsystems for Universal Traffic Management System (UTMS) that totally manages and controls traffic flow to make it smooth and safe. The Universal Traffic Management Society of Japan, established by the initiative of National Police Agency, has been studying and developing UTMS pilot systems. AMIS is the core system of UTMS. AMIS provides drivers with such road traffic information as congestion, travel time and incident data on the road network so that they can avoid urban traffic problems. AMIS utilizes an infrared vehicle detector as communications link that allows two-way exchange of data between a vehicle and a roadside unit.
