Abstract

The paper is focused on a two lane rural road (named S.S. n. 125) which is designed according to the new Italian highway geometric design guidelines (Ministry of Infrastructures and Transports, "Functional and geometrical guidelines for road construction", M.D. November 5th, 2001 ). The national and international models, in order to link driver behavior and road features, are applied on this road. In fact, we know precisely the geometric and design features of the S.S. n. 125; besides this road has a varied alignment, that includes different types of road environment. It allows the testing of several models. At the start of the paper, we sum up the most important national and international models, that enable calculation of operating speed and/or speed environment. The models are tested on the 8.8. n. 125. More models were checked, in relation to different road sections, which are linked to other hypotheses. Next, experimental surveys allowed corroboration of the analytical models. The target of this research work consists in estimating an analytical model that permits calculation of operating speed or speed environment, for example, as a function of the available sight distance.
