Abstract

System dynamics is an intuitive and flexible approach to modeling the behavior of complex systems. The paper begins by tracing the background of system dynamics and contrasting it to the prevailing modeling paradigms in transportation. then, the paper illustrates a simple system dynamics model of mode switching, based on evidence from a panel survey in The Netherlands. The example shows how certain assumptions about dynamic processes in travel behavior can influence both short- and long-term model predictions.
