Abstract

The Advanced cruise-assist Highway Research Association (AHSRA) has been researching infrastructure-based driving support systems called Advanced cruise assist Highway Systems (AHS Systems) since 1996. When introducing AHS systems into the society as a public system, it is very important to evaluate their system safety and reliability to ensure system safety for their users. The authors defined the acceptable system operation error probability by examining complex relation between the human driver and the AHS system to evaluate their system safety and reliability. Fault tree analysis (FTA) is applied to evaluate whether the designed system meets to the defined acceptable system operation error probability. The FTA was applied to the road-vehicle communication system. The result shows that the reliability of the road-vehicle communication system can be realised by introducing several countermeasures such as data correction code, automatic re-transmission, time series data compensation, etc.
