Abstract

The need to finance very expensive urban road works has lead to research and study projects into new ways of identifying vehicles without requiring them to stop or to pay tolls by using coin- operating machines or toll badges. This paper presents results of experiments on rapid tolls, in Europe and in the USA, as well as the expected effects on traffic flow and the provisional cost of equipment built at fixed points or attached to vehicles.
